Arc flash / electrical
Track each piece of electrical equipment's arc-flash study and label, with automatic escalation when a study is missing or the five-year review lapses.
This module keeps an arc-flash study on every piece of electrical equipment under NFPA 70E — incident energy, arc-flash boundary, and PPE category on a label that must be reviewed at least every five years (130.5(G)). Equipment with no label or an overdue review is flagged red.
Register equipment
- Under Register electrical equipment, choose the Site and enter the equipment ID, description, and voltage.
- Click Register. The equipment joins the list, flagged no label until a study is recorded.
Record an arc-flash study
- Find the equipment in the list and click Study.
- Enter the incident energy (cal/cm²), the boundary (inches), and the PPE category.
- Click Save study (today's label) — today becomes the label date, and the five-year review clock starts. The label-review column shows current with the next review date, or turns red for no label or review due.
Extreme incident energy — no safe PPE
When a study records incident energy above ~40 cal/cm², the Incident-energy column shows a red cal/cm² — no safe PPE badge: above that threshold no arc-rated PPE is adequately protective. Engineer the hazard down or prohibit energized work — this danger escalates on its own regardless of the label-review date (see below).
Issue an energized-work permit
For work that cannot be de-energized (NFPA 70E Art. 130), use the Energized work permits section rather than the de-energized isolation path.
- Pick the site and the equipment. Choosing a registered piece snapshots its arc-flash data (incident energy, boundary, PPE category) from that equipment's study; leave it "(not in register)" and type an Equipment ID to enter the values by hand.
- Describe the work and record why it can't be de-energized — the justification required by 130.2(A).
- Name the approver, set the valid-through date, and click Issue permit.
- Click Close once the energized work is done. A permit that passes its valid-through date while still open turns red (expired, still open) and escalates until it's closed or re-authorized.
Retire equipment
Click Decommission on equipment that's been scrapped or permanently removed. It drops out of every attention count and escalation, but its history stays on record.
Export the register
Export label register CSV downloads the arc-flash label register — study data and 5-year review
status — from api/electrical/register.csv.
What happens automatically
- Escalation when a label lapses: the escalation sweep notifies the Safety Team about any in-service equipment that has no arc-flash study on record ("Arc-flash study missing") or whose five-year label review is past due ("Arc-flash label review overdue"), with a link back to this page. Escalation is overdue-only — nothing fires before the review date passes.
- Extreme incident energy above ~40 cal/cm² escalates independently of the review date ("Extreme incident energy — no safe PPE") — it's a standing danger, not a schedule item.
- An energized-work permit left open past its valid-through date escalates ("Energized work permit expired but still open") until it's closed or re-authorized.
- Decommissioned equipment never escalates.
- The dashboard counts registered electrical equipment and overdue/missing arc-flash labels.
Close the gap
Equipment needing attention shows a CAPA button — use it to open a corrective action for a fresh study; the row then links to that CAPA.
Tip: a red no label badge means that equipment has never had a study recorded — start there, since workers have no PPE guidance until it does. Live (energized) work uses the Energized work permits section on this page; to de-energize first, use a permit to work with its linked LOTO procedure.
